Not sure where to start? Not sure who is the right personal trainer for you? Scared to begin? Find my tips below for choosing the perfect trainer for your needs.

Finding the right personal trainer is not as easy as typing 'personal trainer' into google. You have to dig deep first and discover your own goals and intentions before working out if a specific person can help you get there.

As a trainer specialising in women's health, I find it fascinating to observe the trainers that people pick. One size most certainly does not fit all when it comes to progressing in your fitness goals.

If your goal is to strengthen after giving birth, then you'll want someone who understands the post-natal recovery journey. That is not to say that your trainer has to be a female, but it is to say that they will need to be able to actively explain to you the why's behind what you are doing, rather than just doing sit-ups to strengthen your core (which ladies, hate to break it to you, will not get your core back again). Minor muscle group activities, such as pilates interlaced into your training, will be crucial. Don't be afraid to ask questions about their experience and how they plan to help you.

If your goal is to lose weight, then you'll want to choose someone who understands nutrition as well as training. Weight loss is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. Your fitness journey should feel empowering, not a chore you have to do. Work with someone who will challenge you, but also promote your well-being and puts your mental health first.

If your goal is to get strong, you might want to work with someone who understands the benefit of both body weight exercises, but also the power of lifting weights. An activity such as kettlebells can be a really fun way of getting fit and strong, without needing to go to a gym.

Google personal trainers near me and have a look at the reviews people have left. Does it sound like the right fit for you? Call up a few trainers and have a chat about your goals. Cheap isn't always cheerful. Prices will vary considerably depending on experience and qualifications. The most expensive doesn't equate to the best and the cheapest isn't necessarily the most reasonable. Expect to pay for quality, but work with a budget that works for you. Perhaps you're happy working with a brand new trainer, or perhaps you know you'd like to work with someone who has years under their belt. Don't be afraid to strive for the best for yourself.

One of my favourite ways to work out is with friends. If you don't want a one to one personal training session, then get some friends together and start a small group. A garden, park or driveway will work, just find a space and a time where you can all be committed to each other's fitness journey.

If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask. I hope this has helped you on your journey. We all have to start somewhere. Take the leap. Trust your instincts.
